First Life, Then Spaces, Then Buildings
-Jan Gehl
We envision the new L.A. to be an integrated network of greener, softer and more friendly neighborhoods. A series of related spaces will flourish where people come together as individuals or in groups to collaborate, engage and support each other.
Low-income and diverse communities enjoy full access to enhanced and inclusive infrastructure including housing, mobility and urban services. Gender perspectives are incorporated into the specific designs of public spaces in order to facilitate the prevention of violence against women, LGBQTIA+ and all marginalized communities.
Community collectives will employ ongoing assessments of existing conditions to ensure functionalities, infrastructure and spaces will meet the community’s needs. Everyone will be biking. In particular children will bike to school and to social events and the elderly and differently abled people will enjoy ease of access to sources of mobility that meet their needs.
Programs and initiatives centered and shaped around transformational thinking and critical understandings of the systematic barriers to urban resilience will inform design of housing, climate and mobility systems. Buildings and infrastructure will be made of low impact, reversible and regenerative materials.
The urban landscape will be made of green walls and roofs. Sustainable plantings will be enjoyed throughout Los Angeles. The L.A. river and other degraded urban areas will be restored through rewilding and people will live in harmony with nature.
